Chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting was introduced in a landmark 2022 research paper from Google Brain that showed a simple technique could dramatically improve AI performance on multi-step reasoning tasks: instructing the model to "think step by step" before answering. Follow-up research showed that structuring this step-by-step reasoning process even more explicitly - with specific reasoning stages rather than just "think step by step" - produced further improvements.
The mechanism works because of how AI language models process text. Models generate output token by token, and each generated token becomes context for the next one. When a model writes out its reasoning steps before its answer, the reasoning itself becomes additional context that improves the quality of the final conclusion.
